Model: KD-34XBR2, KDP-57XBR2, KDP-65XBR2 No. 553
Subject: Video-5 480p Picture Blanks, and/or Picture Date: November 13, 2001
Size Changes/Shifts Left With All Signals
         Through All Inputs (Including Tuners).

Symptom:
(2357) Symptom #1- When viewing 480p (progressive scan) signals through the video-5
input the picture may intermittently blank out and then come back again. Customers
may describe the symptom as "picture blinking" or "picture flashing". Video-6 input
                       does not exhibit these symptoms.

Symptom #2- When viewing any source at all, including the tuners, the picture may
suddenly change size, e.g. it changes from 4:3 normal mode to full screen mode, and
then it changes back again. In some cases, the picture size may shrink and shift to
                       the left momentarily.

Some sets may exhibit only one of the above mentioned symptoms, while other sets
may exhibit both. It is therefore important that both of the following countermeasures
be applied in sets that do not already have them applied.

Solution: For symptom # 1- Suggest that the customer use the video-6 input for the 480p
source, as this is the easiest and quickest solution. If the customer is already using
video-6 for another source, or if the customer does not want to use video-6 for the
                       480p source, then replace the B-board. B-boards received from WRPC-AS have a
firmware change as a countermeasure for the symptom.

NOTE: In order to minimize the time required to touch up the picture adjustments
when replacing the B-board it is recommended that you use the NVM reader/writer jig
to copy the adjustment data from the NVM IC004 on the original B-board and write it
to the NVM IC004 on the new B-board. If an NVM jig is not available you can remove
the NVM IC004 on the original B-board and install it in place of the NVM IC004 on the
new B-board. The NVM IC has only 8 pins and is easy to remove and re-install.
See the last page for the location of IC004 and the points to which the NVM jig's
                       reset lead must be connected.
Approx. applicable serial number ranges for symptom/solution # 1:
                              KD-34XBR2 8000000 - 8004710

                              KDP-65XBR2 9000000 - 9000360

For symptom # 2- Replace ferrite beads FB7601 and FB7602 on the QM-board
(inside the digital receiver/decoder box, or "Q-box") with 220 ohm metal chip resistors.
Approx. applicable serial number ranges for symptom/solution # 2:

                         FB7602

 resistors, part # 1-216-813-11.

The QM-board is located inside the

               R085 R074
                           IC004

When using the NVM jig to read and write
data, the jig's reset lead (black mini-clip)
must be connected to R074 to read data,
and to R074 and R085 at the same time to
write data. It's easiest to solder thin
insulated jumper wires (about 2" long) to
the points indicated by the white circles,
and attaching the jig's reset lead to the
free end of the jumper wire. When writing
the data, you can twist the free end of
each wire together so that you can
connect the jig's reset clip to both of them
                                       at the same time.
