Systems Network

Introduction to
Sessions between
Systems Logical Units
Logical Vnits (LVs) are the ports through which users
communicate across an SNA network. The communication
path through the network is represented by an LV to LV
(LV-LV) session, and each user is represented by a logical
unit.
This book discusses the use oflogical units to support
application-to-application and application-to-terminal
communication. The types of LV-LV sessions are defined
and the characteristics of each type are discussed.
The type number that is assigned to an LV-LV session
identifies the combination of SNA functions that may
be used. A given LV supports only sessions that draw
from those allowable functions. A product is thus
characterized by the LV-LV session type (or types) that
it supports.
For a given LV-LV session, the session type and its
associated proftles or specified in the BIND command
when the session is established. The session type selected
for the LV-LV session depends on the end-user's need.
The type must be one that is supported by the
implementation.
