Fuel Pump Relay
Troubleshooting Flowchart

    Inspection of fuel pump relay.



  Turn the ignition switch to the
  START (III) position.


                                         NO     Inspect the fuel pump resistor
        Does the engine start?
                                                (see page 11-141).
                     YES
                                                                                             PCM CONNECTOR C (12P)

  Check for an open in the circuit:
  1. Stop the engine.
  2. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  3. Measure voltage between
     PCM connector terminal C4
     and body ground.



                                         NO
       Is there battery voltage?                     (To page 11-140)                       Wire side of female terminals

                     YES

                                                                              No. 21 HOSE
  Problem verification:
  1. Start the engine. Hold the
     engine at 3,000 rpm with no
     load (in Park or neutral) until
     the radiator fan comes on,
     then let it idle for at least one
     minute.
  2. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  3. Disconnect No. 21 hose from
     the install pipe, and connect a
     vacuum pump to the hose.
  4. Apply vacuum 27 to 40 kpa
     (200 to SOOmmHg, 8 to 12
     in.Hg).                                                                                    VACUUM PUMP/GAUGE, 0 - 30 in.Hg
  5. Start the engine.                                                                          A973X-041-XXXXX
  6. Hold engine speed at 6,500
     rpm (transmission in        or
     position).
  7. Measure voltage between
     PCM connector terminal C4
     and body ground.



                                                Substitute a known-good PCM
                                         NO     and recheck (see page 11-42 for
       Is there less than 1.0V?                 immobilizer information). If pre-
                                                scribed voltage is now available,
                     YES                        replace the original PCM.


    Fuel pump relay circuit is OK.

  Check for open in the fuel pump         CAUTION: * the PCM connector C (12P)

  relay:                                  must be disconnected for this test or
  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.        the PCM will be damaged.
  2. Disconnect the PCM connec-
      tor C (12P) from the PCM.
                                                                                     Wire side of female terminals
  3. Disconnect the 4P connector
      from the fuel pump relay.
  4. Connect fuel pump relay con-
      nector terminals No. 2 to No. 4
      with a jumper wire*.                                                            PCM CONNECTOR C (12P)
  5. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  6. Measure voltage between
      PCM connector terminal C4
      and body ground.




                                         YES
       Is there battery voltage?                  Replace the fuel pump relay.
                                                                                    Wire side of female terminals
                     NO




  Check for an open in the wire:
  1. Remove the jumper wire.
  2. Measure voltage between the
     fuel pump relay 4P connector
     terminal No. 2 and body
     ground.




                                                 Repair open in wire between the
                                         NO      fuel pump relay and the No. 22
       Is there battery voltage?
                                                 FUEL PUMP (20 A) fuse in the
                                                 under-dash fuse/relay box.
                     YES




  Repair open or short in wire
  between PCM (C4) and the fuel
  pump relay.
