OVERHAUL
HINT:
S COMPONENTS: See page 30-15
S Overhaul the RH side by the same procedures as the LH side.
1. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (See page 40-9 )
2. DRAIN TRANSFER OIL (4WD DRIVE TYPE) (See page 31-9 )
HINT:
Perform the procedure only when removing the RH side.
3. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL
4. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB LH NUT
(a) Using SST and a hammer, unstake the staked part of the
axle hub LH nut.

(b) While applying the brakes, remove the lock axle hub LH
nut.
NOTICE:
Loosen the staked part of the nut completely, otherwise the
F40146 screw of the drive shaft may be damaged.
5. SEPARATE FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSY LH
(a) Remove the nut, separate the stabilizer link assy LH.
HINT:
If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a hexagon

6. SEPARATE SPEED SENSOR FRONT LH
(a) Remove the bolt and clip, and separate the sensor wire
and flexible hose from the shock absorber.
NOTICE:
S Be careful not to damage the speed sensor.
S Prevent foreign matter from being attaching to the
speed sensor.

(b) Remove the bolt, and separate the speed sensor front LH
from the steering knuckle.

7. SEPARATE TIE ROD ASSY LH
(a) Remove the cotter pin and nut.
(b) Using SST, separate the tie rod end from the steering

8. SEPARATE FRONT SUSPENSION ARM SUB-ASSY
LOWER NO.1 LH
(a) Remove the bolt and 2 nuts, and separate the front sus-
pension arm sub-assy lower from the lower ball joint.

9. SEPARATE FRONT AXLE ASSY LH
(a) Using a plastic hammer, separate the drive shaft from the
axle hub.
NOTICE:
S Be careful not to damage the boot and speed sensor
rotor.
S Be careful not to damage the boot.

10. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH

(a) Using SST, remove the front drive shaft assy LH.

NOTICE:
S Be careful not to damage the oil seal boot and dust
cover.
S Be careful not to drop the drive shaft assy.

11. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSY RH (2WD

(a) Using a screwdriver, remove the drive shaft bearing
bracket hole snap ring.
(b) Remove the bolt and front drive shaft assy RH from the
drive shaft bearing bracket.

12. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSY RH (4WD DRIVE TYPE)
HINT:
Overhaul the RH side by the same procedures as the LH side.
NOTICE:
S When removing and installing the front drive shaft assy RH in the 4WD vehicle, drain all the
transaxle oil and transfer oil. If the removal and installation is performed without draining these
oils, the transfer oil will flow into the transaxle side, which will mix these 2 different oils. In this
case, cleaning the inside of the transaxle and the transfer is required.
S Do not damage the oil seal and dust cover.
13. FIX FRONT AXLE ASSY LH
NOTICE:
SST
The hub bearing could be damaged if it is subjected to the
vehicle weight, such as when moving the vehicle with the
drive shaft removed.
Therefore, if it is absolutely necessary to place the vehicle
weight on the hub bearing, first support it with SST.

14. INSPECT FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH
(a) Check that there is no remarkable play in the radial direc-
tion of the outboard joint.
(b) Check that the inboard joint slides smoothly in the thrust
direction.
(c) Check that there is no remarkable play in the radial direc-
tion of the inboard joint.
(d) Check the boots for damage.

Keep the driver shaft level during the inspection.
15. REMOVE FRONT AXLE INBOARD JOINT BOOT
CLAMP
(a) Using pliers, remove the inboard joint boot LH No.2
clamp, as shown in the illustration.
(b) Remove the inboard joint boot LH clamp by the same pro-
cedures as the inboard joint boot LH No.2 clamp.

16. SEPARATE FR AXLE INBOARD JOINT BOOT
(a) Remove the inboard joint boot from the inboard joint shaft.

17. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE INBOARD JOINT ASSY LH
Matchmarks
(a) Place matchmarks on the inboard joint assy and outboard
joint shaft.
NOTICE:
Do not punch the marks.
(b) Remove the inboard joint assy from the outboard joint
shaft.

(d) Place matchmarks on the outboard joint shaft and tripod
joint.
NOTICE:
Do not punch the marks.
(e) Using a brass bar and hammer, remove the tripod joint

Matchmarks Do not tap the roller.

18. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT DAMPER LH
(a) Using pliers, remove the drive shaft damper clamp, as
shown in the illustration.
(b) Remove the drive shaft damper.

(a) Using pliers, remove the outboard joint boot LH No.2
clamp, as shown in the illustration.

(b) Using SST and a steel plate, install a new front drive shaft

(a) Using SST and a press, install a new drive shaft dust cov-
er RH until the distance from the tip of center drive shaft
to the drive shaft dust cover RH reaches the specification,
as shown in the illustration.

33. INSTALL OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT
HINT:
Vinyl Tape Before installing the boots, wrap the spline of the drive shaft
with vinyl tape to prevent the boots from being damaged.
(a) Temporarily install a new outboard joint boot with 2
clamps to the drive shaft.
(b) Pack the outboard joint shaft and boot with grease in the
boot kit.

34. INSTALL FRONT AXLE OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT

(a) Hold the drive shaft in a soft vise.
(b) Secure the 2 outboard joint boot clamps onto the boot.
(c) Place SST onto the outboard joint large boot clamp.

Clearance: 0.8 mm (0.031 in.) or less
(d) Tighten the SST so that the large clamp is pinched.
Turn R10425 NOTICE:
Do not overtighten the SST.
(e) Using SST, adjust the clearance of the large clamp.

(f) The procedure for the outboard joint small boot clamp is
the same as above.
NOTICE:
SST
When the measured value exceeds the specified value, re-
tighten the clamp.

35. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE SHAFT DAMPER LH
(a) Make sure that the damper is on the shaft groove.
(b) Set the distance, as described below.
Distance: 221.0 " 2.0 mm (8.701 " 0.079 in.)
NOTICE:
Be sure to install the clamp in the correct position.

(d) Secure the damper setting clamp onto the damper.
SST (e) Place SST onto the damper setting clamp.

Do not overtighten the SST.

(g) Using SST, measure the clearance of the damper setting
clamp.

36. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE INBOARD JOINT ASSY LH
(a) Place the beveled side of the tripod joint axial spline to-
ward the outboard joint shaft.
(b) Align the matchmarks placed before removal.
(c) Using a brass bar and hammer, tap in the tripod joint to the
outboard joint shaft.
NOTICE:
Matchmarks S Do not tap the roller.
C67417 S Be sure to install the tripod joint assy in the correct
direction.
(d) Using a snap ring expander, install a new shaft snap ring.
(e) Pack the outboard joint shaft and boot with grease in the
boot kit.

37. INSTALL FR AXLE INBOARD JOINT BOOT
(a) Install the inboard joint boot to the outboard joint shaft.
38. INSTALL FRONT AXLE INBOARD JOINT BOOT
CLAMP
(a) Install the inboard joint boot clamp.
(1) Hold the drive shaft in a soft vise.
(2) Secure the 2 inboard joint boot clamps onto the
boot.
(3) Place SST onto the inboard joint large boot clamp.

C86269 (4) Tighten the SST so that the large clamp is pinched.
NOTICE:
Do not overtighten the SST.
(5) Using SST, adjust the clearance of the large clamp.

(b) Install the inboard joint boot LH clamp by the same proce-
dures as the inboard joint boot LH No.2 clamp.
NOTICE:
When the measured value exceeds the specified value, re-

39. INSPECT FRONT DRIVE SHAFT
(a) Check that there is no remarkable play in the radial direc-
tion of the outboard joint.
(b) Check that the inboard joint slides smoothly in the thrust
direction.
(c) Check that there is no remarkable play in the radial direc-
tion of the inboard joint.
(d) Check the boots for damage.

40. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH
(a) Coat the spline of the inboard joint shaft assy with ATF.
(b) Aligh the shaft splines and install the drive shaft assy with
a brass bar and hammer.
NOTICE:
S Set the snap ring with the opening side facing down-
ward.
S Be careful not to damage the oil seal boot and dust
C83851 cover.
41. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSY RH (2WD
DRIVE TYPE)
(a) Using a screwdriver, install the drive shaft bearing bracket
hole snap ring.
(b) Install the bolt.
Torque: 32 Nm (330 kgfcm, 24 ftlbf)
NOTICE:
Do not damage the oil seal and boot.

42. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSY RH (4WD DRIVE TYPE)
HINT:
Install the RH side by the same procedures as the LH side.
NOTICE:
S Set the snap ring with the opening side facing downward.
S Be careful not to damage the oil seal boot and dust cover.
43. INSTALL FRONT AXLE ASSY LH
(a) Install the drive shaft assy LH to the front axle assy LH.
NOTICE:
S Be careful not to damage the outboard joint boot.
S Be careful not to damage the speed sensor rotor.
44. INSTALL FRONT SUSPENSION ARM SUB- ASSY
LOWER NO.1 LH
(a) Install the lower ball joint to the front suspension arm sub-
assy lower with the bolt and 2 nuts.
Torque: 127 Nm (1,300 kgfcm, 94 ftlbf)

45. INSTALL TIE ROD ASSY LH
(a) Install the tie rod end to the steering knuckle with the nut.
Torque: 49 Nm (500 kgfcm, 36 ftlbf)

(b) Install a new cotter pin.
NOTICE:
If the holes for the cotter pin are not aligned, tighten the nut further up to 60_.
46. INSTALL SPEED SENSOR FRONT LH
(a) Install the speed sensor to the steering knuckle with the
bolt.
Torque: 8.0 Nm (82 kgfcm, 71 in.lbf)

(b) Install the flexible hose and the speed sensor to the shock
absorber with the bolt, and set the clip of sensor on
knuckle.
Torque: 19 Nm (192 kgfcm, 14 ftlbf)
NOTICE:
S Be careful not to damage the speed sensor.
S Prevent foreign matter from attaching to the speed
sensor.
C83022 S Do not twist the sensor wire when installing the sen-
sor.
47. INSTALL FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSY LH
(a) Install the stabilizer link assy LH with the nut.
Torque: 74 Nm (755 kgfcm, 55 ftlbf)
HINT:
Hold If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a hexagon (6 mm)
Turn wrench to hold the stud.

48. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB LH NUT
(a) Using a socket wrench (30 mm), install a new hub nut.
Torque: 294 Nm (3,000 kgfcm, 217 ftlbf)
(b) Using a chisel and hammer, stake the axle hub LH nut.

Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgfcm, 76 ftlbf)
