DISPOSAL
HINT:
S Disposal procedure of the RH side is the same as that of the LH side.
S When scrapping a vehicle equipped with an SRS or disposing of the curtain shield airbag assy LH,
always first deploy the airbag first in accordance with the procedure described below. If any abnormal-
ity occurs with the airbag deployment, contact the SERVICE DEPT. of TOYOTA MOTOR SALES,
U.S.A., INC.
CAUTION:
S Never dispose of the curtain shield airbag assy LH
that has an undeployed airbag.
S The airbag produces an extremely loud exploding
sound when it is deployed, so perform the operation
out-of-doors and where it will not create a nuisance
to nearby residents.
S When deploying the airbag, always use the specified
SST (SRS Airbag Deployment Tool). Perform the op-
eration in a place away from electrical noise.
S When deploying the airbag, perform the operation at
SST
least 10 m (33 ft) away from the curtain shield airbag
assy LH.
S The curtain shield airbag assy LH is extremely hot
when the airbag is deployed, so leave it alone for at
H40004 least 30 minutes after deployment.
S Use gloves and safety glasses when handling the cur-
tain shield airbag assy LH with a deployed airbag.
S Do not apply water, etc. the the curtain shield airbag
assy with the deployed airbag.
S Always wash your hands with water after completing
the operation.
1. DISPOSE OF CURTAIN SHIELD AIR BAG ASSY LH
(WHEN SCRAPPING VEHICLE DEPLOYMENT
Battery METHOD)
HINT:
Prepare a battery as the power source to deploy the airbag.
SST (a) Check the function of the SST (see step 1-(a) on page
60-21 ).
(b) Disconnect the airbag connector.
H40005 (1) Remove the roof headlining assy (see page
76-27 ).
(2) Remove the instrument panel assy w/ passenger
airbag assy (see page 71-10 ).
(3) Using a screwdriver, disconnect the curtain shield
airbag connector (see page 60-40 ).

Front Side: (c) Install the SST.
(1) Connect the connectors of the SST to the curtain
SST shield airbag assy LH connector.
SST 09082- 00700, 09082- 00802 (09082- 10801,
09082-20801)
NOTICE:
Take care not to damage the SST wire harness.

Move the SST to at least 10 m (33 ft) away from the
front of the vehicle.
(3) Rear side:

Move the SST to at least 10 m (33 ft) away from the
rear of the vehicle.
SST (4) Close all the doors and windows of the vehicle.

Take care not to damage the SST wire harness.
(5) Connect the red clip of the SST to the battery posi-

tive (+) terminal and the black clip of the SST to the
negative (-) terminal.
(d) Deploy the airbag.
Battery (1) Check that no one is inside the vehicle or within 10
m (33 ft) area around the vehicle.
SST (2) Press the activation switch of the SST and deploy
10 m (33 ft) or more the airbag.

(e) Dispose of the curtain shield airbag assy LH.
CAUTION:
S The curtain shield airbag assy LH is extremely hot
when the airbag is deployed, so leave it alone for at
least 30 minutes after deployment.
S Use gloves and safety glasses when handling the cur-
tain shield airbag assy LH with a deployed airbag.
S When moving the vehicle for scrapping which has the
curtain shield airbag assy LH with the deployed air-
bag, use gloves and safety glasses.
S Do not apply water, etc. to the curtain shield airbag
assy LH with a deployed airbag.
S Always wash your hands with water after completing
the operation.
HINT:
When scrapping a vehicle, deploy the airbag and scrap the ve-
hicle with the curtain shield airbag assy LH being installed.
2. DISPOSE OF CURTAIN SHIELD AIR BAG ASSY LH
(WHEN DISPOSING OF AIRBAG ASSEMBLY
Battery DEPLOYMENT METHOD)
NOTICE:
S When disposing of the curtain shield airbag assy LH
only, never use the customer's vehicle to deploy the
SST
airbag.
S Be sure to follow the procedure given below when de-
H40005 ploying the airbag.
HINT:
Prepare a battery as the power source to deploy the airbag.
(a) Check the functioning of the SST (see step 1-(a) on page
60-21 ).
(b) Remove the curtain shield airbag assy (see page
60-40 ).
CAUTION:
When removing the curtain shield airbag assy, work must
be started 90 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to
the "LOCK" position and the negative (-) terminal cable is
disconnected from the battery.

(d) Using a service-purpose wire harness for the vehicle, tie

1.25 mm2 or more (0.0019 in.2 or more)
CAUTION:
If the wire harness which is too thin or alternative object is
used to tie down the curtain shield airbag assy, it may be
snapped by the shock when the airbag is deployed. Always

mm2 (0.0019 in.2).

Width S To calculate the square of the stripped wire harness sec-
tion:
Square = 3.14 x (Diameter)2 divided by 4
S Position the curtain shield airbag assy LH inside the tire
as shown in the illustration.
Tire size: Must exceed the following dimensions

CAUTION:
Rear Side:
Width Make sure that the wire harness is tight. It is highly danger-
ous when looseness in the wire harness results in the cur-
tain shield airbag assy LH coming free due to the shock
from the airbag deploying.
NOTICE:
The tire will be marked by the airbag deployment, so use a

(f) Place the tires.

CAUTION:
Place the tire so that the deployment direction of the cur-
tain shield airbag assy LH will be downward.
(1) Place at least 2 tires under the tire to which the cur-

(2) Place at least 2 tires over the tire to which the curtain
shield airbag assy is tied. The top tire should have
the wheel installed.
NOTICE:
Rear Side: Do not place the SST connector on the tine because the
SST connector could damage.

(3) Tie the tires together with 2 wire harness.
CAUTION:
Make sure that the wire harness is tight. It is highly danger-
ous when looseness in the wire harness results in the tires
coming free due to the shock from the airbag deployment.
HINT:
Place the SST connector and the wire harness inside tires. Se-
cure at least 1 m (3 ft) of slack for the wire harness.

(g) Install the SST.
Front Side: Connect one SST connector to the SST connector con-
nected to the curtain shield airbag.

Battery NOTICE:
To avoid damaging the SST connector and wire harness,
SST do not lock the secondary lock of the twin lock.
Also, secure some slack for the SST wire harness inside
the tire.

(h) Deploy the airbag.
(1) Connect the red clip of the SST to the battery posi-

tive (+) terminal and the black clip of the SST to the
battery negative (-) terminal.
Battery (2) Check that no one is within 10 m (33 ft) area around
the tire which the curtain shield airbag assy is tied

(3) Press the activation switch of the SST and deploy
the airbag.

(i) Dispose of the curtain shield airbag assy.

(2) Place the curtain shield airbag assy in a plastic bag,
tie the end tightly and dispose of it in the same way
as other general parts disposal.
